Hailing from a family rooted in farming, with his father Arun Mandlik and mother Vandana Mandlik dedicated to agriculture, Virendra found his calling in kabaddi at the age of 15. Inspired by the kabaddi enthusiasts in his village, particularly drawn to the agility and skill of the players, Virendra embarked on his kabaddi journey as a Left Raider.
